Moment of honesty...some days feel rough and just Moment of honesty...some days feel rough and just wanted to eat my feelings.

I can hear the voices in my head, “I know I shouldn’t eat this.” “This is bad for me. It is too much sugar” “Ugh, I wish had I better willpower.”

Raise your hand if you’d had a day like this and can relate to these feelings?

I often hear stories like this from my patients as well. Sometimes you just want a bowl of ice cream and a good Netflix show to let go of all of all the stress and worry from your day, month, even year!

I am here to say that this is okay to fall off of eating “perfectly”! Give yourself these times but also know that if this is often your go to there are so many ways you can deal with this.

First and foremost, dealing with the stress that is the underlying cause and second working on balancing your hormones - especially insulin and glucose when it comes to PCOS.

This is not about willpower.

It is an underlying hormone issue and can be treated with supplementation and dietary/lifestyle changes.

Stress has been a hot topic lately in my patient v Stress has been a hot topic lately in my patient visits. This time of year can be so tough for a lot of people. Weather changes can really impact our mood and stress levels. These are three supplements to help support the nervous system and can help to reduce stress.

1. Magnesium bisglycinate is known for its ability to relax our muscles. The bisglycinate form actually is most helpful when it comes to stress.
2. L-theanine is an amino acid that naturally occurs in green tea and can help to reduce stress without causing drowsiness. Stay tuned for my next post on this one!
3. Ashwagandha is one of the herbs that can help our body in so many ways; especially when it comes to stress. It is known as an adaptogen and can help with mental and physical stress. It also helps with sleep, energy and fertility.

Did you know that by having Polycystic Ovarian Syn Did you know that by having Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome you are at an increased risk of developing Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. This is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland causing inflammation and damage to the thyroid gland. Eventually it can cause a decrease in thyroid hormone production known as Hypothyroidism. Symptoms of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis include fatigue, weight gain and feeling cold.

Researchers studied about 827 women with PCOS who were receiving fertility treatments and it was found that Hashimoto’s thyroiditis was 3x more common in women with PCOS than women without the syndrome.

Why is this important? Having an autoimmune condition like Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis can impair fertility among other symptoms such as weight gain.

What can you do? Always ask your healthcare provider to monitor your thyroid gland via lab work. Two tests that can determine if Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is present include Anti-thyroglobulin and Anti-thyroperoxidase - these are two antibodies that are produced in the immune system that can attack the thyroid gland.

How can this be treated? Both conditions (PCOS and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) can be treated using lifestyle changes including diet, exercise and supplementation.

This is exactly how food can impact ovulation in w This is exactly how food can impact ovulation in women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. If diet isn’t altered it can be hard to regulate the cycle in a lot of women who have PCOS.

Women with PCOS can make higher levels of insulin in response to glucose resulting in higher testosterone. Testosterone can block estrogen production making it harder to ovulate.

When we ovulate this is the time where we produce a good amount of progesterone. So if we are not ovulating regularly the brain isn’t exposed to the progesterone causing testosterone to remain high.

I remember trying to watch for every sign that I c I remember trying to watch for every sign that I could if I was ovulating. I became obsessed with checking LH stripes - sometimes I would check twice a day thinking it would result in a positive test. 

Don’t get me wrong I did see the LH stripe become positive on many cycles, sometimes it was late, sometimes right on time. 

Basal body temperature tracking was even worse. Because this will tell you when you have already ovulated it wasn’t helpful for PCOS as ovulation was variable month to month. 

So next I tried Ovusense - this was a device that you insert vaginally that tracks core temperature. This definitely eliminated some stress. 

Overall getting an ultrasound at the clinic a few times in the first half of the cycle was helped but was tough to do every month. 

At the end of the day, everything was stressful - I am not going to lie! But this post is to inform you that there are ways to test for ovulation in PCOS and some key signs to look out for. As months went by I started to learn more about my body in terms of the signs of ovulation including cervical discharge, tenderness around the ovaries etc. 

The next device I am trying now is TempDrop - this is a wearable temperature monitor on the arm. I am excited to see what the results will say!
