…when I was first diagnosed with PCOS. 

Now having been diagnosed over 10 years ago now, and into my mid thirties, this is something I am thinking more about. 

If you have PCOS, the number one thing you can do is get a yearly check up via bloodwork to ensure your health is healthy. At your next doctor’s appointment, if your doctor isn’t informed about the risk, let them know that having PCOS you are twice as likely to have a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke.

I was obsessed. Going through my fertility I was I was obsessed. 

Going through my fertility I was obsessed with getting pregnant. I reviewed my ultrasounds almost daily, checked my LH ovulation stripes multiple times. I looked back at old labs all the time. I was constantly thinking about it. 

“What am I doing wrong?” I would ask. 

I worked so hard the years before to set my body up, only to get to trying and it just didn’t work. 

I felt like I tried everything. 

I was taking the supplements, exercising, eating well, doing yoga, meditating and more. 

My problem was that I was obsessed with it all. It engulfed me to the point where my body was like, “no this is not the space a baby wants to grow.”

I started going back to things I enjoyed doing. Reading books was something I have always enjoyed. 

Reading was my escape. 

It really helped me to separate myself from getting pregnant. It calmed my stress and it really helped me to think about something other than my lab reports. 

I know some of you out there can resonate. 

I encourage you to think of something that brings you joy while you are trying to conceive.

Did you know that by having Polycystic Ovarian Syn Did you know that by having Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome you are at an increased risk of developing Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. This is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland causing inflammation and damage to the thyroid gland. Eventually it can cause a decrease in thyroid hormone production known as Hypothyroidism. Symptoms of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis include fatigue, weight gain and feeling cold. 

Researchers studied about 827 women with PCOS who were receiving fertility treatments and it was found that Hashimoto’s thyroiditis was 3x more common in women with PCOS than women without the syndrome. 

Why is this important? Having an autoimmune condition like Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis can impair fertility among other symptoms such as weight gain. 

What can you do? Always ask your healthcare provider to monitor your thyroid gland via lab work. Two tests that can determine if Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is present include Anti-thyroglobulin and Anti-thyroperoxidase - these are two antibodies that are produced in the immune system that can attack the thyroid gland. 

How can this be treated? Both conditions (PCOS and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) can be treated using lifestyle changes including diet, exercise and supplementation.

I remember very distinctly sitting in a restaurant I remember very distinctly sitting in a restaurant contemplating all of the careers I was interested in. The only one I always came back to was a naturopathic doctor. The the naturopathic doctor I had seen when irregular cycles and extreme acne hit me was the only person who helped me to confirm my diagnosis of PCOS.
