by Dr. Samina Mitha, ND on March 7, 2022 with No Comments

It can be overwhelming to receive a Polycystic Ovary Syndrome diagnosis. Women often wonder: “What exactly is PCOS, and what does this mean for me?” I often hear women saying that they’re told not to worry about their symptoms. Furthermore, that they can start treating their PCOS when they want … Read More

Removing carbohydrates from the diet entirely may Removing carbohydrates from the diet entirely may not result in weight loss that is sustainable from what I have seen in clinical practice.

We should not be afraid to eat carbs, instead, we should choose the right carbohydrates and pair them with healthy protein, fat and veggies. This helps to prevent a rapid rise in blood sugar that can make #insulinresistance worse.

Complex carbohydrates are what you want to choose.

These carbs digest slower because of their complex structure and prevent blood sugar from rising too quickly. I like to think of it like a tree branch with multiple branches where the body has to take its' time to break it down into individual molecules of glucose.

Examples of complex carbohydrates include:
- brown rice
- quinoa
- millet
- buckwheat
- whole wheat
- barley
- legumes
- starchy vegetables such as squash and sweet potato

Simple carbohydrates are like a pearl chain of glucose molecules. It is very easy and fast to break it down into individual molecules of glucose. Blood sugar as a result will rise quickly here. These are foods such as white bread, juices, candy, baked goods, syrup, etc.

If you have any questions about carbohydrates drop them in the comments below!

Insulin resistance is one of the key symptoms pres Insulin resistance is one of the key symptoms present in abdominal weight gain, inflammation, and PCOS. What most people don't know, however, is that this can manifest in our skin's health and appearance.
.
Acne for example, do you know why it's associated with insulin resistance? Or that there are other very specific ways that our skin can give us clues about insulin resistance, such as hair loss, darkening of the skin in the underarms or neck area, hidradenitis suppurative (this looks like boils) and skin tags.

I never knew my anxiety was linked to my PCOS when I never knew my anxiety was linked to my PCOS when I was first diagnosed.

I remember worrying about everything little thing. And to be honest, to this day sometimes I feel the same.

I know when I am eating well and focusing on my mental health that my anxiety is much better. I don't have that constant monkey brain - thinking, ruminating, planning, etc.

This week is Canadian Mental Health Week and I am here to break down the stigma of anxiety and depression that many people deal with, having #pcos or not.

There are so many ways to deal with anxiety.

Check out my blog post on ways to deal with anxiety by heading to my blog and searching "anxiety."

I strongly believe in the support of a community. I strongly believe in the support of a community. No one knows exactly what you are going through without the support of others going through the same thing. ⁣
. ⁣
In 2013, they looked at the impact of online peer to peer support for women with PCOS. ⁣
. ⁣
What they found was that support groups helped with the following: ⁣
- connecting with others who understand ⁣
- accessing information and advice ⁣
- building confidence in the interactions individuals have with their health care providers ⁣
- facilitated treatment-related decision making⁣
- improved adjustment and management of their PCOS. ⁣
. ⁣
However, they did find that women could experience feelings of disempowerment by: ⁣
- reading negative experiences ⁣
- feeling like an outsider due to lack of responses ⁣
. ⁣
I feel like the positives outweigh the negatives from what they found. It is really about joining each other and supporting each other as much as we can. This creates positive vibrational energy that is so unique! ⁣
. ⁣
Come join our Facebook Group called - Natural PCOS support group. It is non-judgemental, relaxed and informative! I will be posting on it regularly and supporting you as much as I can. ⁣

I remember going through my board exams to officia I remember going through my board exams to officially become a Naturopathic Doctor and I was studying for 3-4 months for the exam.

I didn't feel too stressed because I had a plan and I was getting through all the material. I was eating well and trying to move my body as much as possible.

But my period disappeared. 😩

It was super annoying. I have patients come and tell me they feel like sh*t when their period disappears. Almost as if they are PMSing for days on end.

I know EXACTLY what this feels like.

When my period disappeared for these 4 months my body didn't feel the best. I was definitely stressed about the board exams and my body was telling me this by my period not showing up.

After I finished writing my board exam, a week later my period showed up. And I celebrated 🎉 🎉🎉🎉

I always get so excited when patients email me with the same happiness celebrating the arrival of their period. Seems so silly because most people dread getting their period. But when it comes to PCOS, getting a period can feel like a huge accomplishment.

I know EXACTLY what this feels like.

Having our period on a regular basis is a sign that your hormones are healthy.
