Should you consider a probiotic supplement. You ma Should you consider a probiotic supplement. You may if you have POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME!

Our body houses billions of bacteria in the gut both good and bad bacteria. The key is having a larger population of good bacteria in the gut - this is known as probiotics. Probiotics are good bacteria that help to keep us healthy. The more good bacteria we have vs bad bacteria the more balanced our whole system will be.

What do probiotics do?
- Helps to maintain our immune system
- Helps to protect use against pathogens
- May also influence hormones and our metabolic system

Research with PCOS
- Shows women with PCOS have lower diversity and levels of good bacteria in the gut and the vaginal microbes.
- It has been found that a specific bacteria known as Bacteroides found in the stool of women with PCOS is associated with promoting insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances and inflammation in women with PCOS

Increasing probiotics can…
- Improve insulin resistance, lipid profiles, hormones and reduce inflammation

Ways to get probiotics
Food: PCOS friendly probiotic rich foods include: kombucha, fermented foods like kimchi sauerkraut, miso, pickles
Supplements: multi strain probiotic - speak to provider for the right one for your case.

Removing carbohydrates from the diet entirely may Removing carbohydrates from the diet entirely may not result in weight loss that is sustainable from what I have seen in clinical practice.

We should not be afraid to eat carbs, instead, we should choose the right carbohydrates and pair them with healthy protein, fat and veggies. This helps to prevent a rapid rise in blood sugar that can make #insulinresistance worse.

Complex carbohydrates are what you want to choose.

These carbs digest slower because of their complex structure and prevent blood sugar from rising too quickly. I like to think of it like a tree branch with multiple branches where the body has to take its' time to break it down into individual molecules of glucose.

Examples of complex carbohydrates include:
- brown rice
- quinoa
- millet
- buckwheat
- whole wheat
- barley
- legumes
- starchy vegetables such as squash and sweet potato

Simple carbohydrates are like a pearl chain of glucose molecules. It is very easy and fast to break it down into individual molecules of glucose. Blood sugar as a result will rise quickly here. These are foods such as white bread, juices, candy, baked goods, syrup, etc.

If you have any questions about carbohydrates drop them in the comments below!

Insulin resistance is one of the key symptoms pres Insulin resistance is one of the key symptoms present in abdominal weight gain, inflammation, and PCOS. What most people don't know, however, is that this can manifest in our skin's health and appearance.
.
Acne for example, do you know why it's associated with insulin resistance? Or that there are other very specific ways that our skin can give us clues about insulin resistance, such as hair loss, darkening of the skin in the underarms or neck area, hidradenitis suppurative (this looks like boils) and skin tags.

I never knew my anxiety was linked to my PCOS when I never knew my anxiety was linked to my PCOS when I was first diagnosed.

I remember worrying about everything little thing. And to be honest, to this day sometimes I feel the same.

I know when I am eating well and focusing on my mental health that my anxiety is much better. I don't have that constant monkey brain - thinking, ruminating, planning, etc.

This week is Canadian Mental Health Week and I am here to break down the stigma of anxiety and depression that many people deal with, having #pcos or not.

There are so many ways to deal with anxiety.
