Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy, it involves the insertion of very fine needles at specific points in the body in order to balance the flow of “qi” or energy circulating throughout. The pattern of smooth energy flow in the body is required for maintaining health. It is very beneficial for balancing hormones, anxiety, digestive concerns, pain and more.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy, which dates back 2,500 years. It involves the insertion of thin needles at specific points in the body in order to balance the flow of qi or energy circulating throughout. The pattern of smooth energy flow or qi along various channels or meridians in the body is required for maintaining health. When there is a disruption in the flow of energy, disease can become apparent. Ultimately, the treatment works to encourage the natural healing process by rebalancing the physical, mental and emotional disharmonies within the body. The insertion of needles may also be combined with moxibustion (a herbal heat source) or electrical stimulation.

What to expect before treatment?

At the clinic, I will work with you to first gain information in regards to your health status. I will ask a variety of questions regarding your lifestyle, which may include your symptoms, diet, energy levels, characteristics of pain, etc. Once all information is obtained, our interns will determine a pattern of disharmony and then develop a treatment protocol with various acupuncture points that work synergistically together. Depending on your case, there may be 5-15 points, which are scattered throughout the body or concentrated in one area. Additionally, I will inspect your tongue and check your pulse on both arms to gain information on the overall health of your body.

What to expect during treatment?

Acupuncture needles are solid, hairlike thin and tend to cause very little discomfort when inserted. Most patients do not find needle insertion to be painful. However, you may experience a deep aching sensation, which indicates the needles are inserted to the correct depth. This also means the needles have activated the qi in your body. Additionally, it is common to feel soreness, tingling, electrical sensation or burning at the site of needle insertion. Typically the needles will stay in for 15-45 minutes depending on your case.
